Greyhound, Galgo Espaņol und Podenco
Above all, New
Graceland rescues Greyhounds, Spanish Galgos and Podencos (sub-species
Ibicenco and/or Canario). If you donīt have a dog or are not a
connoisseur of wind dogs, this is no obstacle to adoption. You will be
surprised at how gentle and devoted these dogs are. Greyhounds, Galgos
and Podencos have very pleasant attitudes, if one takes into
consideration a number of points. We are always happy to advise you.

The
Greyhound is the largest short-haired wind dog and the fastest dog
in the world. It was used once as a hunting dog for hares, used only by
the English landed aristocracy. After the hunt was banned on living
game, the Greyhoundīs speed became its calamity. Professional courses
were opened to race these dogs and, in England alone, the course
industry today is worth 25 million euros a year. The fact that thereby
the individual animal does not count any longer will probably strike a
chord with everyone. In countries without professional running, the
Greyhound is regarded as a fine, calm partner. With a shoulder-height of
over 70 cm, it is an impressive dog with requirements for space. The
Greyhound has a friendly nature, is intelligent, devoted, well-balanced
and very flexible. In the house, it is calm and clean. A dog should
weigh between 25 - 30 kg, although a male can weigh up to 40 kg. The
life expectancy is up to 14 years.
The
Spanish Galgo is the wind dog of Spain. It is a patient, very robust
dog, whose role was hunting in open meagre areas, often on stony, sharp
edged sub-soils. Nowadays, the Spanish Galgo in its original pure form
hardly exists. Due to professional wind dog racing, Galgos were crossed
with Greyhounds by those greedy for profit. If the Galgo is not only
physically but also psychologically fully-grown (approx. 3 years of
age), then it will live in the house very calmly. In the free field,
however, it will display its full temperament and joy of life. With
patience and empathy, it is easy to win the dogīs confidence and it will
be very devoted to its owner. With other humans, it can behave rather
reservedly.
It has short hair and there are 2 types of coat, smooth and wiry. Its
shoulder-height is between 60 - 70 cm. A dog weighs between 23 - 28 kg,
a male may weigh up to 35 kg. The life expectancy is to up to 16 years.
T he
Podenco is still used in Spain today for rabbit hunting, but it
is kept under most miserable conditions. Outside of Spain,
unfortunately, it is generally heard of only in cases of animal
protection. Most of them have coats of red, white or a combination of
both. Their coat can be either smooth or wiry. The Podenco has an
extremely fine sense of smell and a very good hearing (enormous ears).
Podencos love to play and run. If one provides sufficient occupation,
they are calm and balanced in the house. In relation to its family, it
is very appreciative, enjoying cuddles and loving attention. On the
other hand, the Podenco treats strangers with polite reserve. One can
meet its passion for hunting with positive encouragement, lots of
patience and a wealth of ideas for exercise and fun. A Podenco can grow
up to 73 cm tall. A dog can weigh, depending upon subspecies, up to 30
kg, a large male up to 40 kg. The life expectancy is up to 16 years.
