Racing Greyhounds in Ireland In Ireland about 50'000 greyhounds are bred
every year for the race tracks.
The yearly revenue of the racing industry is several millions
of
Euro
and their main goal is to achieve
the highest possible profit. In view of the fact that these dogs are held in extremely poor living conditions
it is a scandal that each litter is subsidized by the EU. Petitions of animal protection groups against this
practice were without any effect. Firm commitments from the EU were bypassed by rerouting the subsidies
to another section. Racing Greyhounds in Spain Some "washed-out" greyhounds have been exported from Ireland to Spain quite recently.
But also in Spain they lived and died in agony. In the meantime the racetracks had to close-down for fiscal reasons
which at first was a relief to animal rights activists. It soon become clear that after the closure of the
race-tracks at Barcelona a high number of these mistreated Greyhounds have been literally killed over night. Galgos in Spain In Spain Galgos (Spanish greyhounds) are used for the hunt which lasts from September to end of
January. During this time the Galgos are raced across the countryside for miles without food or medical treatment.
At the end of the season the dogs are worn out and useless for the hunters. There are already new whelps growing
up for the next hunting season, and the "used" Galgos are killed in a barbarous way. Podencos in Spain Also used in hunting they suffer the same fate
as the Galgos and many other hunting dogs.
