Here you can find important information about health.

This does not replace however going to the veterinary surgeon!

If your veterinary surgeon does not have experience with wind dogs (and/or anaesthesia, Greyhoundsperre, Mediterranean diseases), please get contact with us.

Anaesthesia

Important! Greyhounds, Galgos and Podencos cannot have anaesthesia with barbiturates. Barbiturates spread throughout the body fat. Clearly, since wind dogs proportionally have fewer fatty tissue than dogs of other breeds, they do not wake up from the anaesthesia! It is vital that you draw the attention of your veterinary surgeon to this before an operation. An anaesthesia can be accomplished using other medicines.

Myoglobinuria after an agitation or a sprinting

In contradiction to the predominating opinion (or to the name of the illness) each wind dog, not only the over-trained Greyhound, can be affected it. The Greysperre is not to be compared under any circumstances with a human muscular strain, but, within a very short time, becomes a life-threatening illness. It is important to know that not all veterinary surgeons are aware of this illness; therefore the wind dog owners must contribute, using their specialized knowledge, to intervene quickly with the veterinary surgeon to save the dog´s life. Do not allow the veterinary surgeon to vibrate the head; tell him about the following described treatment or look for another veterinary surgeon as quickly as possible, who can help your dog. It helps some veterinary surgeons if you explain to them that it has the same threat as a horse with  “cross joint impact “.
A condition for the Greysperre is always a strong load on the musculature,
possibly by hunting, a sprint or excessive play. Again, it does not depend primarily on the training conditions of the dog, but it can affect each wind dog. Cold weather or stifling warm air exacerbate the danger. After an intensive pursuit, after a long sprint or after intensive play, one should observe the urine of the wind dog. As soon as it appears darker, the danger exists that it has a Greysperre, which results in kidney damage if untreated. It must be further observed as to whether the dog can get up well, whether it walks gently or runs around on “tip toes”, whether it is particularly tired or if a  fever arises. Please observe it carefully for the next two or three days.
With advanced Greysperre, the dog hardly moves or does not move at all. It lies on the ground, with legs crossed, because of pain and cramps, the tongue is long, thickly swollen and out-stretched, the eyes weep, the dog has extremely high fever, the urine is black, etc.

Go as soon as possible to the veterinary surgeon to avoid the progressive symptoms which are torture to the dog!

A safe diagnosis should enable a veterinary surgeon to find out why the Greysperre condition has occurred and whether one can improve the conditions for the dog, so that such a thing does not happen again.

Mediterranean diseases

Our dogs are taken, after the arrival at the collection point, first to our quarantine. Each dog is thoroughly examined by the veterinary surgeon. Among other things the blood is tested for the Mediterranean diseases Leishmania, Dirofilariose, Ehrlichiose and Babesiose.

With most dogs the results are fortunately negative.

You will, of course, be fully enlightened by us about the state of health of your foster dog.

We advise you in detail about each dog.

Leishmania is the most well-known Mediterranean illness.
With this infection, parasites - called Leishmanien - are  transferred by sand flies when they bite humans or animals. After the bite, the Leishmanien in the white blood corpuscles increases in humans or animals and can cause very different disease symptoms. From recent investigations, it is clear that the Leishmania can break out after months or years. That is, the first blood test taken by veterinary surgeon indicates perhaps nothing during the initial health check but, nevertheless, the dog has Leishmania. If undeterminable disease signs should begin to emerge in the future, it is extremely important to repeat the Leishmania test. Once diagnosed, Lieishmania can be managed easily with the correct treatment. The treatment of a Mediterranean illness belongs in the hands of veterinary surgeon and alternative medicine (e.g. homoeopathy, Bach flower remedies) can support this treatment gently.
